Common Furnace Repair Issues

When you have a furnace that is starting to age, you need to be prepared for some repairs soon. Planning for these repairs makes it less of a financial burden when you need to replace certain parts. Here are some of the most common furnace problems and repairs;

  • Frequent cycling
  • Cracked heat exchanger
  • Dirty filters
  • Slipped or frayed blower belt
  • Pilot control problems
  • Electric switch failure
  • Malfunctioning thermostat
  • Flickering pilot light or yellow pilot light
  • Worn out ball bearings
  • Limit switch
  • Unusual noises
  • Will not turn on
  • Leaking water

Maintain Your Furnace to Reduce Problems

One of the best things you can do to increase your furnace’s lifespan is to spend a little time maintaining it. Set a reoccurring alarm on your calendar to remind yourself to change your air filter monthly. Air filters are needed to clean the air circulated through the home and reduce the amount of dust, dirt, and pollen that can build up on the blower motor.

Check the thermostat in your home to determine if it is to blame for heating issues. If the furnace doesn’t produce heat, the thermostat battery level could be low and needs to be replaced. If you replace the thermostat battery and are still having problems, consider replacing the thermostat with a modern thermostat.

If your home’s temperature is still wrong, make sure all of the supply vents around your home are free of any blockage. Objects can block within the vent or around the outside. The heat is meant to flow freely throughout the home and just one of the vents being blocked or closed can affect the overall temperature. Also, while furnaces are usually located in areas away from the normal living spaces, be sure there is nothing flammable sitting around the furnace at any time.
